One of the more interesting studies released recently illustrated the connections between violent crime rates and environmental stewardship.
Published in the peer-reviewed journal, Environmental Research, the study reports a "very strong association" over more than 50 years between the exposure of young children to the toxic metal lead, and crime rates 20 years later when they are young adults. More here.

The best thing on the net today might be A Siegels' piece on No new Coal over at Daily Kos. A moratorium against new coal power generation plants would be one of the most important steps we could make in the foreseeable future. Check it out.

The environmental impact of the livestock industry (or the purchasers and consumers of meat, depending on how you want to see it) is thoughtfully and bluntly discussed in this realistic piece at HuffPost. Countless studies show time and again that we all need to dramatically cut back or eliminate our consumption of beef and other meats.

Perhaps the most important thing a person could read today is this little ditty about just how fast climate change is coming.
In North America, our federal governments are still doing nothing significant about it. What do the conservatives think they are conserving?

(Thank you. And excellent conceptual illustration, of a wrong and a solution. - promoted by Rick)
Make the Right Choice the Easy Choice is one of Energize America's core principles. When it comes to energy, all too often, there are bureaucratic, financial, and other factors that inhibit the right choice being the easy choice for government, businesses, and individuals.
Sadly, this is not limited to energy issues.
Just today, listening to NPR, I learned that there is a twist to agricultural insurance that serves as a barrier to good, sustainable, organic agricultural practices.

It's summer! Enjoy it! And when you are grabbing your sunscreen, know whether the one you use is a scam or an effective protection. It's easy :
In a new investigation of 785 name-brand sunscreens, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found widespread evidence that many products on the market are not safe and effective.../ We have also identified 130 products that offer very good sun protection with ingredients that present minimal health risks to users. Find out which in our best and worst lists. more over>

Along with other national and global challenges, our environmental problems are increasingly critical. Perhaps the priority should be getting politicians into power that recognize we need policies with people's interests in mind - not more myopic profiteering for transnational corporations. Meanwhile, know that there are housands of very positives things we could do together. For one example, check out this brief video; (over>)

It's always seemed and been obvious to those who think about it, but understandably, most people don't think about it often. Lax environmental standards and or enforcement in China are effectively working environmental standards here, in as much as we import huge portions of our diet and products from that country. Since the government of China recently admitted that pollution is killing 750,000 or more people there every year, perhaps we should take a closer look at what that means right here. More over>

Live Earth's stated goal of raising awareness was accomplished in a massive way on the weekend. And as the concert wrapped up, Al Gore asked the audience to "Put all of this energy into helping solve the climate crisis." Mainstream media articles noted that over 2 billion people watched - or certainly were aware - so if a significant portion of those people make even a little effort - the results will be profound.

Leading up to Live Earth, Al Gore is rightfully in the news a lot these days. Today, he has an op-ed in the New York Times that summarizes the environmentally-progressive movement's message very clearly. Check it out here.

Without having even decided yet, publicly anyway, and without a single campaign stop or spending a single campaign dollar, Al Gore is in first place for the Democratic Nomination in New Hampshire. More>
